Diplomacy is a tough job. But occasionally it has its rewards. This evening is one of those. The opportunity to participate in the launch of a new car. And not just any car. An exciting new British car that is receiving rave reviews around the world. So thank you to Land Rover, and to Automobile Africaine, for inviting me to participate in this splendid occasion.
Land Rover is one of the strongest and most recognised UK brands. The very first Land Rover vehicle was launched in 1948. The company has been responsible for producing some of the most iconic cars ever made, from the Defender, famous for its off-road ability to the Range Rover, its premium brand, first launched in 1970, which has brought increasing luxury to the four by four market.
Land Rover has continuously invested in the development of its brands. And the evidence is here today in the Range Rover Evoque that you have all come to see. This is the smallest, lightest and most fuel efficient Range Rover built. It’s an exciting car. A head-turner. I am sure it will be a great success in the Senegal market.
The Evoque is a fantastic example of all that is great about UK manufacturing. Be it in automotive, aerospace or any other field of engineering, the UK possesses world-class capability in advanced engineering. Our automotive sector for example is taking a lead in the development of low-carbon vehicle technologies. UK-based companies are prominent in a wide range of areas, including design engineering, advanced materials and manufacturing and are renowned for their innovation and commitment to research and development.
Innovation is key to world competitiveness and the cornerstone of successful business. You see a classic example of this here today.
Congratulations to Land Rover on another great product.
