How to register a marriage or a birth
The British Embassy does not celebrate marriages and marriages are not registered at the Embassy. The Embassy can, on your behalf, deposit your original marriage certificate at the General Register Office (GRO) in the UK. This service does not incur a fee. Once this is done, you will no longer be able to retrieve the original copy.
How to register a birth
Babies born in our Consular district (Senegal, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and Mali) who are entitled to British citizenship can be registered at the Embassy. Please click here for our list of fees. This will mean that the birth will be registered with the GRO in the UK. The documents needed are: Parents passports, marriage certificate if applicable, child's local birth certificate and the relevant fee. This service can be done in 5 working days.
If you need more information on the GRO please access their website at www.gro.gov.uk.
