Peace-building in the Casamance
A 23-year civil conflict in the Casamance region of southern Senegal brought devastation for the entire community and threatens peace in the sub region. Supported by the British Embassy, World Education designed a programme aimed at building peace and restoring prosperity in the Casamance.
The key objective of this programme was to strengthen communication amongst the diverse communities of Casamance, to help form a structure for better conflict resolution.
World Education used the British Embassy’s support, alongside support from others, to set up a community radio network. They wanted to break the silence and isolation imposed by the conflict, and help rebuild local capacities and confidence.
The community radio network is now up and running and has already facilitated the collaboration of diverse ethnic groups in community-level human rights training.
